The New Jerusalem

⁹ Then came ^(A)one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of ^(B)the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you ^(C)the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” ¹⁰ And ^(D)he carried me away in the Spirit to ^(E)a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, ^11 (F)having the glory of God, ^(G)its radiance ^(H)like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. ¹² It had a great, high wall, ^(I)with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— ¹³ on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. ¹⁴ And the wall of the city had twelve ^(J)foundations, and ^(K)on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

¹⁵ And the one who spoke with me ^(L)had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. ¹⁶ The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia.^[a] Its length and width and height are equal. ¹⁷ He also measured its wall, 144 cubits^[b] by ^(M)human measurement, which is also ^(N)an angel's measurement. ¹⁸ The wall was built of ^(O)jasper, while the city was pure gold, like ^(P)clear glass. ^19 (Q)The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, ²⁰ the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. ²¹ And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and ^(R)the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

²² And ^(S)I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. ²³ And the city ^(T)has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for ^(U)the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. ²⁴ By its light ^(V)will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth ^(W)will bring their glory into it, ²⁵ and ^(X)its gates will never be shut by day—and ^(Y)there will be no night there. ²⁶ They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. ²⁷ But ^(Z)nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's ^(AA)book of life.

²⁹ And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was ^(A)altered, and ^(B)his clothing became dazzling white. ³⁰ And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, ³¹ who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,^[a] which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. ³² Now Peter and those who were with him ^(C)were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake ^(D)they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

16 ^(A)And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and ^(B)to test him ^(C)they asked him to show them ^(D)a sign from heaven. ² He answered them,^{[a] (E)}“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ ³ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ ^(F)You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret ^(G)the signs of the times. ^4 (H)An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So ^(I)he left them and departed.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

⁵ When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. ⁶ Jesus said to them, “Watch and ^(J)beware of ^(K)the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ⁷ And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” ⁸ But ^(L)Jesus, aware of this, said, ^(M)“O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? ^9 (N)Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember ^(O)the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? ¹⁰ Or ^(P)the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? ¹¹ How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? ^(Q)Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ^12 (R)Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of ^(S)the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

^13 (T)Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” ¹⁴ And they said, “Some say ^(U)John the Baptist, others say ^(V)Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” ¹⁵ He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” ¹⁶ Simon Peter replied, ^(W)“You are ^(X)the Christ, ^(Y)the Son of ^(Z)the living God.” ¹⁷ And Jesus answered him, ^(AA)“Blessed are you, ^(AB)Simon Bar-Jonah! For ^(AC)flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, ^(AD)but my Father who is in heaven. ¹⁸ And I tell you, ^(AE)you are Peter, and ^(AF)on this rock^[b] I will build my church, and ^(AG)the gates of ^(AH)hell^[c] shall not prevail against it. ¹⁹ I will give you ^(AI)the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and ^(AJ)whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed^[d] in heaven.” ^20 (AK)Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

^21 (AL)From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that ^(AM)he must go to Jerusalem and ^(AN)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on ^(AO)the third day be raised. ²² And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord!^[e] This shall never happen to you.” ²³ But he turned and said to Peter, ^(AP)“Get behind me, Satan! You are ^(AQ)a hindrance^[f] to me. For you ^(AR)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

²⁴ Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him ^(AS)deny himself and ^(AT)take up his cross and follow me. ²⁵ For ^(AU)whoever would save his life^[g] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. ²⁶ For ^(AV)what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or ^(AW)what shall a man give in return for his soul? ^27 (AX)For the Son of Man is going to come with ^(AY)his angels in the glory of his Father, and ^(AZ)then he will repay each person according to what he has done. ²⁸ Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not ^(BA)taste death ^(BB)until they see the Son of Man ^(BC)coming in his kingdom.”

Moses Makes New Tablets

34 The Lord said to Moses, ^(A)“Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, ^(B)and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, ^(C)which you broke. ² Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me ^(D)on the top of the mountain. ³ No ^(E)one shall come up with you, and let no one be seen throughout all the mountain. Let no flocks or herds graze opposite that mountain.” ⁴ So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first. And he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand two tablets of stone. ⁵ The Lord ^(F)descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and ^(G)proclaimed the name of the Lord. ⁶ The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ^(H)“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and ^(I)gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast ^(J)love and faithfulness, ^7 (K)keeping steadfast love for thousands,^{[a] (L)}forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but ^(M)who will by no means clear the guilty, ^(N)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.” ⁸ And Moses quickly ^(O)bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. ⁹ And he said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, please ^(P)let the Lord go in the midst of us, for ^(Q)it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for ^(R)your inheritance.”

The Covenant Renewed

¹⁰ And he said, “Behold, ^(S)I am making a covenant. Before all your people ^(T)I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an ^(U)awesome thing that I will do with you.

¹¹ “Observe what I command you this day. Behold, ^(V)I will drive out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. ^12 (W)Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a ^(X)snare in your midst. ¹³ You shall ^(Y)tear down their altars and ^(Z)break their pillars and cut down their ^(AA)Asherim ¹⁴ (for ^(AB)you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), ^15 (AC)lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and when they ^(AD)whore after their gods and sacrifice to their gods and ^(AE)you are invited, you eat of his sacrifice, ¹⁶ and you take of ^(AF)their daughters for your sons, and their daughters ^(AG)whore after their gods and make your sons whore after their gods.

^17 (AH)“You shall not make for yourself any gods of cast metal.

^18 (AI)“You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in ^(AJ)the month Abib, for in the month Abib you came out from Egypt. ^19 (AK)All that open the womb are mine, all your male^[b] livestock, the firstborn of cow and sheep. ²⁰ The ^(AL)firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. And ^(AM)none shall appear before me empty-handed.

^21 (AN)“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. ^22 (AO)You shall observe the Feast of Weeks, the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year's end. ^23 (AP)Three times in the year shall all your males appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel. ²⁴ For I will ^(AQ)cast out nations before you and ^(AR)enlarge your borders; ^(AS)no one shall covet your land, when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year.

^25 (AT)“You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with anything leavened, ^(AU)or let the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover remain until the morning. ^26 (AV)The best of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God. ^(AW)You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.”

²⁷ And the Lord said to Moses, “Write these words, for in accordance with these words ^(AX)I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” ^28 (AY)So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. And he ^(AZ)wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.^[c]

The Shining Face of Moses

²⁹ When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with ^(BA)the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face ^(BB)shone because he had been talking with God.^{[d] 30} Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face ^(BC)shone, and they were afraid to come near him. ³¹ But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. ³² Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he ^(BD)commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. ³³ And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a ^(BE)veil over his face.

³⁴ Whenever Moses ^(BF)went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, ³⁵ the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face was ^(BG)shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
